NASA: FRONTIER DEVELOPMENT LAB

What if we could forecast floods to save millions of lives? What if we could predict a solar flare before it sends us into darkness? Are there resources on the Moon that would allow us to live there?  Every summer, NASA brings scientists together from around the world at its incubator, Frontier Development Lab, to answer questions like this.

By creating and sharing Google Cloud’s technology, we have the power to change how scientists fundamentally look at complicated questions and can help solve some of humanity’s biggest problems.

Using Google Cloud’s AI, the brightest minds can make discoveries in a fraction of the time previously possible. From mapping the moon to forecasting solar flares to providing advanced flood detection warning, researchers are now empowered to collaborate globally for the benefit of all humankind.

Each summer, top PhD students from around the world collaborate together. Data scientists are teamed up with researchers from other space science fields. The teams are given AI and ML technology and mentors to help guide them in an 8 week research sprint.

We followed three research teams as they grappled with these challenges, and told their stories. The full campaign included an Anthem film, 3 x documentaries, a website and a takeover of San Jose airport.
